Delicious Honey Apple Rugoleh for Rosh Hashanah

Rosh Hashanah is the first of a series of Jewish Holy Days that take place during September and is a very important holiday for Jewish people around the world. During this Holiday, families come together to celebrate the beginning of the new cycle of the year and  the Birthday of the world. Like most other religious holidays, Rosh Hashanah incorporates symbolism into the customs of the holiday.  Two  of these important symbols used, are “Sweet” and “Round”.

Everything is sweet during this New years holiday! It was traditionally thought that what you ate would influence your year. Jewish people therefore, stayed away from salty, bitter and sour foods, and placed an emphasis on sweetness especially on the sweet new fruits of the season. Apples and honey based desserts such as Apple cake, Honey Cake, and Apple Rugoleh at Rosh Hashanah have always been popular choices among North American Jews, especially in the cold climates where fresh crisp apples are ready just in time.

‘Round’ is also a very significant symbol used during Rosh Hashanah. Round Challah is baked to symbolize Beginning of the cycle of a new year, a new cycle of the earth and the cycle of life.  Raisins are often added to the Round Challahs to make delicious Raisin Challah.

Solly’s Shops will be all abuzz with Rosh Hashanah Shoppers for the next few weeks.  If  you see a customer buying  a Round Challah or honey cake, please wish them a “Shana tova u’metuka” which means Have a good Sweet New Year!
